Steam Generators

Common Application

  1. Oil deodorization

Many industrial processes require heating media temperatures between 400 and 600°F. Media choices are organic heat transfer media in vapor phase, organic transfer fluid, or steam from water. The disadvantages of organic media in deodorization applications are well-documented: even traces of the fluid in edible oils are unacceptable in food processing and food additive applications. Water is the safest medium for heat transfer in many cases. The deodorization market is eliminating the use of thermal fluids in food grade applications and gravitating toward high pressure steam heaters.

The NUK high pressure steam generator is a vertical down-fired heating system that combines the best features of a steam system with the safety and efficiency of an organic vapor system. The need for feed-water systems, flow control devices, blow down separators, steam traps, or condensate return pumps is eliminated by the use of a hermetically sealed, closed loop system. After commissioning, this design requires little maintenance and rarely needs additional water.

Advantages of the NUK High Pressure Steam Generator

  1. Steam is non-toxic
  2. Reduced maintenance cost due to reduced FAC (Flow Accelerated Corrosion)
  3. Natural circulation eliminates pumps
  4. Fewer auxiliaries result in reduced upfront cost, maintenance and downtime
  5. Increased efficiency compared to an open loop system
  6. Fuel versatility
  7. Low emissions design for every unit
  8. Designed and built to ASME VIII code and may not require a licensed boiler operator

The most common application for a high pressure steam generator is in the deodorization of edible oils. The high elevation and high temperature requirements of deodorizers provide ideal conditions for the use of a high pressure steam generator. The water tube coils are pressure vessels built to ASME Section VIII or ASME Section I. System efficiencies range from 82% to 86% (LHV), and supply pressures range from atmospheric to 2000 PSIG.

Design of the NUK High Pressure Steam Generator

The NUK consists primarily of a vertical cylindrical combustion chamber, burner, and manifolds. Chamber walls are lined with vertical pipes with continuously-welded longitudinal fins. The pipes are connected to a lower manifold (fed with condensate) and an upper manifold (connected to the steam outlet). The burner (fueled by natural gas, #2 oil or #6 oil) fires down into the chamber.

The steam generator's vertical piping design eliminates vapor locking, a problem in helical-type boilers due to fluctuating heat loads and the process of charging products in semi-continuous deodorizers.
