Convection Process Heaters

Convection heating is an excellent method of providing low-intensity heat energy to a process medium. This heating method provides for even temperature distribution across an entire coil surface. Combustion chamber temperatures are tightly controlled and tube wall temperatures are kept to a minimum to ensure safe and effective heat transfer. Heat up and cool down times are negligible and burner control can be process-based or heater-based for cyclical operations.

Common Applications

  1. Natural gas heating
  2. Air heating
  3. Ammonia heating
  4. Heating of temperature-sensitive stocks
  5. Thermal fluid heating
  6. Regeneration gas heating
  7. Steam superheating

Newpoint Convection Heater Design

Newpoint custom designs every convection heater with process operating temperatures ranging from cryogenic to above 1100°F and pressures ranging from full vacuum to 2500 PSIG. Depending on the process requirements, heater coil configurations can be finned, bare, or a combination of both. In addition, a wide variety of coil materials can be used to handle even the most challenging products. Newpoint offers systems that can meet the most stringent emissions requirements and include high turndown burners for superior system control.

Control options are virtually limitless with relay logic and programmable logic systems available. User interfaces can be as simple as indicators and push buttons or as advanced as PC-based control. All electrical devices and systems are designed to meet NEMA ratings for their specific environment and third party approvals such as FM, IRI, NFPA, and/or UL.

Advantages of Newpoint's Convection Heaters

  1. Custom designs for up to 95% (LHV) efficiency
  2. Can accommodate cyclical operations
  3. Tight control of process fluid & combustion chamber temperatures
  4. Low tube wall temperatures
  5. Assorted coil materials available based on temperature distribution
  6. Uniform heat flux

Convection Heat vs. Radiant Heat

Radiant heat can be advantageous in some systems; however, convection heaters are ideal for processes that require gentle and evenly distributed heat. Inside a radiant heater, it is impossible to ensure that every inch of coil surface has the same level of exposure to radiant heat; whereas, convection heaters keep the heat flux low and evenly distributed across the coils as required by sensitive process fluids.

Inside a Newpoint Convection Heater

The Newpoint Convection Heater is a purely convective heat transfer unit. The process fluid flows inside externally finned tubes and the flue gas flows around the outside finned surface creating counter current heat transfer. As a result, the flue gas temperature constantly decreases as it travels through the convection section.

The flow of process fluid is split among the coils in order to accommodate the pressure drop requirement that best suits the process. The coil section is located above the combustion section, allowing for nearly 100% convective heat transfer into the process medium. The tubes are installed in the tube supports leaving them free to expand without restriction.
